UST Blog May Edition
This month’s theme is relatable, lovable, and most definitely memorable. This month’s blog revolves around Food. Food is a universal language that is shared by anyone and everyone. Our childhood memories, milestones, and special occasions are remembered by the food we ate and the conversations we shared.

(In this section, students tell food memories. And they write to tell, not to write well. In fact, these stories were written in the most awkward voices they could come up with.)
Mother’s Day of 2009
At the age of 6, I only knew how to do 2 things, heat up a frozen beef patty in the microwave and prepare instant coffee. To show my mom gratitude, I did the only 2 things I knew how to do; heat up a beef patty and make her instant coffee. It was 6 am. I still have no idea how I woke up that early without an alarm. It's 2009, we had Blackberrys, actually played outside and depended on our sleep cycle to wake us up. I was proud of myself for waking up before her. She was an early bird. A very proud accomplishment. I woke her up with "breakfast" in bed. I had the beef patty for breakfast. It was the start of a very good day. A day I have yet to forget.

Writing awkward huh..? Ok, I didn't actually eat anything in this story but I think it's a good one. So when I was in kindergarden someone had spilled a bunch of crackers so a teacher had asked me to get a dustpan to clean it... Oh did I mention there were a bunch of ants everywhere. Anyways to keep it short the teacher had cleaned it up and brought the pan over my head (not really) but a classmate had told me the ants fell in my hair (They didn't). Now I have a pretty bad fear of bugs.

The Pizza Story
When I was small I used to eat a little (Not a lot of food) and I was picky. Then one time I ate 10 slices of pizza in a row, basically the whole BOX! From then I continue to eat a lot of pizza and enjoy it.Lesson learned: None, I don't regret it!
Which also reminds me of the time I burned homemade pizza…. What an experience…. 😳

Cookie
When you think of cookies, I’d expect you to think of a perfectly soft, crunchy cookie. It seems that every time I pick up the ingredients for them, all sense of calm and order vanishes. The dough becomes too sticky to form, and my cookie dough covered hands prevents me from adding more flour. When the dough is finally manageable, it turns out there is too much flour. I give up, throw the dough into the oven, but even then, I can't get the correct time and temperature. The cookies end up over-baked. I hurl the cookies in the trash and start the next batch. Lowering the temperature, lessening the time, ta da! The cookies are under-baked. seeing the calamity my "baking" has caused, I pick up my half baked cookies, and in defeat I watch Gordon Ramsay taunt me with his perfect creations.

Junk Foods
When I was little I used to always eat unhealthy foods heh like cookies, candy, ice cream, you know, stuff I eat on the daily now in corona times. people always looked at me funny when i was a kid, it could have been because i was a bit chubby, or it might have been because i looked like my twin, who is a boy, buttt, I will never know so, you choose.

Graduation 2017
I was in an urge to head to the dining hall after having my photos taken by Michael's mother. I hated sitting in that banquet hall for three straight hours without anything to keep me hydrated.
I sat down with a few friends of mine at a table and the music started playing. Waiters and waitresses came to tables with hot, savoury meals. But all that I could think about is having a glass of water
The moment I had a drink of water, it was refreshing like my mind was brand-new again. I couldn't think about what to consume since food was only served once.
I see people dancing - people doing whips and nae-naes, dabbing, going for the congo line dance, but all I could think about is grabbing a sip of water. Even hearing a teacher asking me to dance with some kid was less important than having a glass of water.
Well what could I say? At least I didn't go through a hangover.

The six Million Dollar Man Snack
I remember when I was younger, my favorite tv show was Six Million Dollar Man. My favorite snack, which was a big bag of banana chips, was always saved for Friday nights ... Yes this was the night when my favorite tv show was aired.
My brothers knew my routine. They apparently were studying me for months. Now it was time for them to have the night of their lives..
My favorite show was about to begin. I reached for my favorite snack. uhhhh... this could not be real!!! nothing!!! The box was empty. I screamed! Not one of my brothers cared to find out why. My father came to the rescue. My brothers will always remember that fateful night.
I will always associate banana chips with the Six Million Dollar Man and Friday nights.

The day at home
It's 7:20 am and my alarm goes off. It's the kind of sound you would hear when the lasagna in the oven triggers the fire alarm. I brush my teeth - I think about the bristles grinding through like ham being placed on a hot pan.
After eating some breakfast, I check my agenda and see that I have a seminar to present in two days. Every time I need to breathe from researching, I take a big gulp of water. Man, I'm really in for a bowl of mini marshmallows - the softness that melts my brain from being overwhelmed from information.
I stopped researching to go to my afternoon class lessons - there's no such thing as a break, so I just run up and down the stairs to get some chips while getting my hands messed up with oil.
At the end of the day - I don't really learn anything other than that ketchup chips are better eaten with chopsticks.

This is a recipe for a Chestnut hot coco. I like this article because hot coco is one of my favourite things to try, especially because there are so many different ways to make it.

This article is about a blacksmith who makes Knives from what remains of the bombs that had been dropped on his home town. This article is fascinating, it talks about the political climate between The people's republic of china (China) and The Republic of China(Taiwan) during the cold war. It's interesting to see how someone can use something that was made to kill people like him, and make tools that people would use in their everyday lives. Plus knife making is super cools to me.

Pizza
Before playing squash, try and make sure you are eating pizza as if it fulfills all the body energy requirements. Pizza contains cheese, that is good for the players because the cheese is great along with mushrooms and a sauce mmhmm good as a poutine. You can pizza with a lot of other foods or soups that make up a great pre-squash meal. We should eat pizza because it can be good to have it like a little pizza party along with a poutine and a drink.
You gotta create a party feel before getting into your game.

Q: A Food tradition from your neighborhood, country-of-origin, or family?
A: Ackee and saltfish
Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish. Many people really enjoy eating this dish, it is not an expensive dish to make and is rich in flavor. This dish is mainly served as a breakfast, but people still eat it at any time of the day. Lots of restaurants continue to serve this as a main dish!

When walking past the checkouts at an Asian supermarket, there appears to be - at first glance - wooden “woven” hats. These peculiar articles are actually Thailand sticky rice steamers. When placed closed end down, coupled with a large metal steamer pot, the sticky rice placed in the wooden basket becomes cooked.
