Welcome to the UST Blog!

In this month's edition, UST shares what we're reading, what we're thinking about, and a few How-Tos.

We'll be posting a new issue of the UST Blog each month, so please check back soon!

What UST Is Reading

Matt Haig's one of a kind Midnight Library is a shining ray of hope for 2020. The pain that this year left with us will stay in 2021. Midnight Library allows us to take a deeper look back and reevaluate our choices and actions, including our regrets. (Still reading it, so this is first thoughts.)

The book is called The Rule of Three: The power goes out, all cars stop, phones don't work, and food is running out. What do you do? Kill? Or starve? Make alliances? Create a clan? Go out on your own? Start harvesting food? Steal? You don't know until you're there.

Right now I am re-reading Inkheart. I enjoy it because it captures the importance of reading and of the imagination.

On The Daily

This morning, I woke up at 7:00 am. I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and did my morning routine. I went to the dining table where I had tea, eggs, and halal bacon for breakfast. It was a wonderful morning.

It’s 7:25 and I’m running late for school. Skip breakfast, do my chemistry quiz, then arrive home to eat. It’s 1:20 pm and I’m sitting in front of a bowl filled with ramen. At last, the meal that breaks my fast.

Squash and Related Stuff

What animal would be the best squash player?

A goldfish, because it has a 10 second memory.  It does not remember the last match, the last game, or the last shot. No memory. No regrets. No re-thinking.

Squash is a mental game. Be a goldfish.

Running a 10k race under 45 minutes would be the holy grail to a healthier lifestyle. To be healthy is to sprint and be capable of aiming for a goal.

UST Tells Ya How-To

The day before Thanksgiving I made a Beef Roast for dinner. I wanted to make something I have never made before. First, you season the beef with salt and pepper. Next you put anything you want on the beef and throw it in the oven at 375 F and hope it doesn't burn.

Cross stitching is the criss-cross patterning that forms "x"s. When combined, along with the variations of colours of thread, these individual "x"s make a pixelated image. Thread a needle with your colour of choice, and a piece of cloth. (Give your needle its coloured pupil, along with a piece of cloth) Threading the needle through the holes, making multiple crosses until you’ve created a masterpiece. Voilà!

More How-To, This Time as a Poem

Knitting a sweater: a project to do while stuck, bored and alone. Hook, yarn and a little time; circles, petals, squares and connect. A little patience and you're left with a prize.
